One of the biggest problems that parents have in regards to potty training is that they wait too long. It’s reasonably assumed that the child will let them know by either telling them or giving some other sign that they are ready. It’s important to know that your child can give you signs that they are ready even if they are unable to talk.

The important thing to remember though is not to force your child to go as this can backfire and create a real fear of going to the toilet.

Think about when you started to learn something new. Did you wait until you knew everything or did you take it step by step. This is the same process a child goes through when learning to potty train. It’s a gradual process that they should be gently eased into.

So you shouldn’t force your child into starting training for the potty but you also shouldn’t leave it too long as this can cause physiological and psychological damage in the long term. If you have a normal, healthy toddler between the ages of 18 and 27 months then they should be ripe for potty training. If you have any concerns that your child is not ready see your pediatrician.

Bear in mind that the diaper industry is a multi billion dollar industry so it is in their best interests to keep your children in diapers for as long as possible. No wonder then that they created the pull up. In my opinion these things are useless and in no way contribute to your child learning to use the potty.

Some things to keep in mind when deciding whether the time is right to potty train:

Your child hasn’t yet had their second birthday but you are aware that the majority of the world trains their child prior to this age.

Your child is between two and three and is giving you clear signs that they are ready such as telling you that they need to go or that they are wet or smelly.

Your child is four and you need to get them potty trained in a hurry to get them ready for school and you feel that you have waited too long.

Here are some tips to get you started.

Once you start don’t stop. Keep it going. It’s better to keep going and get over hurdles then it is to stop and start back at the first steps months later.

Check that your child is ready by watching and listening for signs of readiness such as the child understanding what is required of them and that they can follow directions.

If your child has had dry nappies in the mornings or they can go a few hours during the day without soiling or wetting their nappy then that is a sure sign that they have developed muscle control.

Get a routine going. Take your child regularly to the potty and don’t worry about whether they do anything or not.

Give your child some sort of visual training. This means they have to watch you. Explain what’s happening and help them develop an interest in doing the same thing that the grown ups are doing.

When they finally do their first one in the potty make sure you do a big song and dance and make it fun. Then reward the child for their brilliance.

Rinse and repeat. Use each success to get to the next milestone. Don’t give up, persevere and you will reap the rewards of being diaper free.

Here’s Some Motivation

Disposable nappies are costing you between $1500 and $2500 a year. That’s a lot of nice dinners that your missing out on. Every day that your child is in diapers you will have to change 3 – 4 dirty ones. Imagine the freedom of not having to do that anymore not to mention the time you will save. Also think of the environment. Disposable diapers are one of the biggest contributors to landfill issues that we currently face today.
